Super middleweight Edgar Berlanga, who has yet to be defeated, has named John Ryder as his next opponent and Jaime Munguia as his goal for a bout in 2023.
For Berlanga (20-0, 16 KOs), taking on Munguia now would be a huge risk due to the latter’s superior talent and experience against top competition. He could end up regretting it, but Berlanga taking on Munguia next year.
Aiming to challenge undisputed 168-pound champion Canelo Alvarez or David Benavidez, 25-year-old Berlanga is currently fighting in lower-level bouts to gain experience and improve his reputation.
Berlanga has gone the distance in three of his previous four bouts after scoring sixteen first-round knockouts early in his career.
I want to facilitate the most exciting bouts. My current global ranking is #10, with a score of 168. Edgar Berlanga told Fighthype, “Right now, I have the chance to fight whoever I want.”
I believe in the power of my name to challenge anybody I want, and I am certain that we will prevail in a battle. One John Ryder has been identified as a potential opponent for my next bout. Thus, we’re making an effort to encourage that.
Ryder and Munguia

A fight like that is exactly the kind of thing I want to help organize. The sport benefits from this. It’s great for boxing as a whole. You have Jaime Munguia; by the end of 2019, we will have accomplished something. The tension there is between Mexicans and Puerto Ricans. There’s more fighting over money right there.
Berlanga stated of himself and David Benavidez, “He understands that me and him, it’s a huge, major battle in the future.” He’s seasoned and has two world championships, of course. As a matter of fact, he was quoted as stating, “I believe Edgar Berlanga is a tremendous fighter.” Just have him bring some more battle experience and we can make this thing happen.
All I saw from his dad, Jose Benavidez Sr., during the Canelo fight in Las Vegas was love. A future conflict between you and my kid, if it comes to that, will be a major one, he was adding.
For now, I’m not in a position to challenge Canelo and force a bout. One day he’ll give up his belts, and then I’ll be able to pounce,” remarked Berlanga.
