Gennadiy Golovkin has said that he would not retire from boxing after his unanimous decision loss against Canelo Alvarez after 12 rounds on Saturday night.
Golovkin (42-2-1, 37 KOs) has claimed he may fight again at 160 pounds or stay at 168 pounds to defend his three world crowns.
If Golovkin wants to keep his professional career going strong until the age of 17, he has to choose his opponents carefully.
Was Golovkin just trying to make a profit off of someone?
Golovkin’s performance last night against Canelo showed that he is not capable of the in-ring adaptations that are necessary for great fighters when facing A or B level opposition.
Golovkin opted to step up his aggression against Canelo in round seven of their battle. To this point, Golovkin still wasn’t able to target Canelo well enough to win rounds by a wide margin.
Throughout the bout, Golovkin jabbed from a safe distance, avoiding being hit himself.
It was a losing strategy to try to jab your way past a famous fighter like Canelo.
Golovkin should have known that after facing off twice against the Mexican great. Maybe he wasn’t even trying to win the fight, just to survive the whole 12 rounds. It seemed to many observers to be occurring in the ring.
Golovkin, in an unexpected post-fight boast, said his face was untouched and he had sustained no harm.
Golovkin wasn’t knocked out as he had been in their first two fights, but he still couldn’t stop Canelo.
The judges’ scores were 115-113, with two of them wrongfully giving it to Golovkin. Of the three, I think the 116-114 from the third is the most reliable.
What pride does Golovkin have in not being hit when he lost the fight because he wasn’t aggressive enough?
So it seems like Golovkin is fighting more to avoid defeat than to win. The evidence lends credence to the theory that GGG wasn’t actually wanting to win the fight and was instead motivated primarily by money.
Gennady will not be retiring soon, despite widespread speculation to the contrary.
Now that I’ve hit the big 4-0, I can attest that the old cliché “Forty is the new 36” is absolutely accurate. Everyone here understands and abides by the rules. Analysis is conducted with a reasonable mind. In response to whether he thought he won or not, Golovkin remarked, “The judges voted in Canelo’s favor, and he was the winner of this battle.”
Golovkin said, “There was a plan to lure Canelo closer, to enable him open up, so that I could try to do what I wanted to do.” Perhaps the day had passed its peak and nothing significant could have happened now.
If you ask Golovkin’s trainer, Johnathon Banks, he was furious that his client waited so long to change tactics.

Banks’s lively presence in Golovkin’s corner as early as the fourth round hinted that he was trying to inspire his opponent. Golovkin could see that Banks intended an attack, but he declined.
Golovkin, on the other hand, said, “I didn’t miss any significant hits” from Canelo. I’m not hiding my face from you; you can see that it’s clean. Today is a fresh day, and I feel like giving it my all. Since I began my plan so late, I didn’t allow myself nearly enough time to accomplish it.
Golovkin’s face may have looked beautiful after the fight, but he lost the bout due of his lack of aggression. For a man like Golovkin to choose for prudence shows an admission of loss. But Golovkin was not willing to put in any more work.
“Yes, I can still feel the fire inside me. To a great extent, I like the sport of boxing. Keep in mind that I own three belts at 160 pounds,” Golovkin said. Exceptionally well done! I’m not tired at all since I didn’t let anybody shoot serious bullets at me. Over time, I’ve come to recognize my own inner tenacity and courage. Certainly, if I were given the opportunity, I would love to continue boxing.
