Edgar “The Chosen One” Berlanga, a contender in the super middleweight division, made his debut on the professional boxing circuit in April of 2016, when he knocked out his opponent Jorge Pedroza in the first round of their bout.
From 2016 through 2020, Berlanga would make short appearances inside the squared circle as he knocked out his next fifteen opponents, none of them were able to make it out of the first round. Berlanga would go on to win all of these fights by knockout.
Berlanga was a prospect on the rise, as seen by his career, which includes 16 bouts and 16 first-round knockouts. As a result of his propensity to deliver the swift KO, his following expanded rapidly almost immediately after his debut. Aficionados from Puerto Rico, die-hard boxing followers, boxing enthusiasts from other countries, and celebrities who are fans of the “sweet science” all rushed toward boxing’s new knockout machine.
The run of knockouts that Berlanga was on gave a new and revitalizing kind of energy, excitement, and expectation to the sport of boxing. Fans shouted for Berlanga to continue the streak even as they watched the action in the ring and the time clock at the same time. This let them keep track of how long the run had been going on.
Unfortuitously, there comes a time when even the best things in life must come to an end. In April 2021, Berlanga’s adversary, Demond Nicholson, was able to make it through the first round and go the distance. Berlanga’s following three opponents were able to make it through all 10 rounds against the Puerto Rican Monster, and Nicholson was the one who began the pattern. Edgar Berlanga was about to begin a new knockout streak in June 2022 at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden. However, instead of starting a new streak, he made a very embarrassing career moment for himself.
Berlanga made an attempt to bite his opponent Alexis Angulo around the neck and shoulder region during the seventh round of the bout. Berlanga was successful in earning a win by unanimous decision, and during the post-fight interview, he acknowledged to attempting to bite his opponent. Berlanga was successful in earning a victory by unanimous decision. “He was throwing elbows in our direction. “I was going to give him a Mike Tyson,” Berlanga said. “I was about to perform a Mike Tyson on him.” During the course of his interrogation, he ended up confessing, which led to the New York State Athletic Commission suspending him for six months and fining him $10,000.
Edgar Berlanga, who has never been knocked out in his professional boxing career and has a perfect 20-0 record, is eager to go back into the ring and continue where he left off. Aside from the event in which he bit his opponent, Berlanga was making progress as a boxer; he was able to keep his perfect record intact, and he won a slot in the rankings for the super middleweight division. The 25-year-old fighter said during an interview with Fighthype that he intends to make his comeback to the ring in the month of January, and that his training camp is already preparing for a specific opponent.
“All I want to do is ensure that the greatest bouts take place. Right now, I am in the situation where I am rated number 10 in the world at 168, and right now, I am in a position where I have the ability to fight whomever I want. I believe that my reputation is strong enough to call out anybody I want, and that we will be able to put on the fight. We’ve got a man by the name of John Ryder, and we’ve got him on the radar right now for my next fight, so we’re trying to push that.”
A former WBA interim super middleweight champion, John Ryder has a record of 31-5 with 17 knockouts. In May of 2019, he defeated Bilal Akkawy by technical knockout in the third round, which allowed him to claim the vacant temporary championship. Six months later, Ryder engaged in a bout against Callum Smith for the super middleweight belts held by the WBA and Ring Magazine. Despite Ryder’s heroic efforts, the judges all agreed that he should not win the final match. As a result, Ryder was eliminated from the competition.
Edgar Berlanga and his staff believe that John Ryder is a formidable adversary, and they are keeping their fingers crossed that a deal can be struck with him. A fight between Berlanga and emerging Mexican star Jaime Munguia (40-0, 32 KOs) might be a prospective matchup scheduled for the later half of 2023 if Berlanga is successful in his bout against Ryder.
