Joshua Buatsi has failed to return the contract for an IBF Final championship eliminator bout against Jean Pascal. Consequently, the combat is no longer occurring.
It was anticipated that Lou DiBella and Frank Warren would work together to create the event.
The IBF will instead go farther down the list to determine Pascal’s opponent for the eliminator.
It’s not all that unexpected that Buatsi (16-0, 13 KOs) will not be fighting Pascal, given that he has a much larger bout scheduled with Callum Smith. That product would do well in the United Kingdom but not abroad.
Pascal would have been a very difficult opponent for Buatsi, since even at age 39, he maintains superior hand speed, and he is a strong opponent who would drive Buatsi into an attrition battle.
Since competing at the 2016 Olympics for the United Kingdom, Buatsi’s career has stagnated. Since becoming professional in May 2012, Buatsi has fought one strong opponent, Craig Richards, whom he defeated by a razor-thin 12-round unanimous decision.
It would be a tremendous battle for the fans if Buatsi faced Callum Smith next, but you never know with him. He could be forced to face the same individuals he has been battling for the last five years.
Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing certainly believed he was signing a diamond when he signed Buatsi to a deal with his organization.
Buatsi’s career has not taken off like other Matchroom boxers such as Conor Benn and Anthony Joshua for any reason. We will have to wait and watch whether Hearn re-signs Buatsi when his Matchroom contract ends.
Buatsi is unlikely to defeat Callum or IBF, WBC, and WBO light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev given the manner in which he was shook up by Richards in May. Those men are on a different level than Buatsi, who is 29 years old.

By this time in his career, Buatsi should have seen far more resistance than this. He should have been competing with the likes of Callum Smith years ago rather than waiting until he was 29 to do so.
