Australian boxer and former rugby player Paul Gallen fought twice today in Queensland. The 41-year-results old’s in both fights were victorious. In round two, Gallen was knocked out, making an already bad situation much worse. It seemed as if an upset was on the horizon, and the concept of battling two men in one night was being exposed as a naive one.
Nonetheless, Gallen showed grit by rallying; at the conclusion of the session, Hodges was reeling and swaying. Gallen won, 5-2(2). Then in the third round, Gallen went to town, slamming away at Hodges until the referee stopped the fight. Gallen improved to 14-2. (8).
Defeating two respectable but not world-class opponents in one night was a wonderful way to create a little bit of boxing history, and Gallen should be commended for his accomplishment. As for Hodges, he claims the referee’s decision to end the bout was “total bulls**t!” and wants a rematch. As Gallen only has one fight remaining on his current fight contract, and as this rematch seems to be a logical fit, it is possible that it may take place in November.
A rematch between Gallen and Hodges might go the distance, with six rounds being a distinct possibility. Everybody who saw today’s brief but intense battle urges, “Bring it on!” It’s understandable that not every bout can be a showcase of The Sweet Science, but we’re always appreciative of a wild, raw power exhibition like the one these two warriors showed us today.
